Abstract: William Pelz's book is a summary of the first 50 pivotal years of European labour thought (1871-1921). He begins with the Paris Commune, the First International and the rise of trade unions in England, Germany and France. As well as providing information on the political currents of the time-socialism, syndicalism and anarchism he also specifically discusses woman and socialism. Other topics include: anti-military, anti-colonial struggles, the impact of the First World War and the subsequent divisions within the left. Pelz revues the Russian Revolution, the reasons for its success and its failure in going beyond the borders of the Soviet Union.
